Why 1 in 5 Officers want to
Leave the Job they once loved!
And Why I do What I Do...
In my conversations with your colleagues over the past months, here are the words that I heard the most:
"I gave my life to the police, I don't know anything else".
Does any of this sound familiar to you?
It breaks my heart that over two decades after I went through this unnecessary chronic suffering, it seems you, who I still consider to be my colleagues, are still going through exactly the same 'challenges' that I did. Has Nothing changed!

When I was medically retired, I felt betrayed, abandoned, discarded, disrespected, hopeless, helpless, and thrown onto the scrap heap - and all of that on top of the effects of a divorce, mental illness and spinal injuries. It seems far too many of you are feeling the similarly, the same, or even worse!

For some, the decision to leave the force or retire may seem daunting, even heart-wrenching. After dedicating years, perhaps decades, to this way of life, the idea of walking away can be fraught with conflicting emotions - guilt, fear, uncertainty, and a significant sense of personal loss.
For others, the thought of remaining in a role that no longer aligns with their values or well-being may be equally, if not more, distressing. The pension still years away, but suffering with the daily dread of just one more shift, the emotional exhaustion and the increasing strain on personal relationships with loved ones can become too much to bear.

"With no other qualifications, what else can I do"?
Whichever camp you find yourself in, one thing is sure: your emotional and psychological well-being should be a top priority now. Too often, especially in the law enforcement community, we are expected to bury our feelings and power through all adversity with unwavering stoicism. But the truth is, ignoring our emotional health can be just as detrimental as neglecting physical health.

The decision to resign or retire is a deeply personal one, and each individual's emotional journey is unique. The effects can range from no ‘reported’ effects to utter devastation. Some may experience relief and a sense of newfound freedom, while others may grapple with feelings of grief, loss of identity, and overwhelming uncertainty about the future.

Because transition can have a profound impact on one's emotional and psychological state, it is crucial to approach it with care, high levels of self-awareness, and a firm commitment to one's overall well-being.
Whether you ultimately decide to:
- Rediscover your passion and happily and healthily remain in the police, complete your career, and collect your pension with pride, or
- Embark on an exciting new and challenging chapter in your life.
Either way, prioritising your emotional and psychological well-being is the first priority and the only solid foundation upon which you should make any impending life-altering decisions if you are to go on to achieve a fulfilling and meaningful future—whatever you decide to do.
